The Rise of the Creative Builder
How I built a chrome extension within 60 minutes without knowing a line of React. And why your business must use AI.
This newsletter is brought to you by “The 7 Data Product Strategies” - the ebook for product managers and entrepreneurs who want to build amazing data-heavy products.
AI isn’t just knocking on the door of creativity—it’s kicking it wide open. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been fully immersed in this world, exploring everything from ChatGPT to Claude and even dabbling in Midjourney. I’ve devoured books like “Cointelligence,” binge-watched YouTube tutorials, and plowed through countless articles.
Here’s what I’ve realized: We’re at a turning point. AI is no longer just a tool for the select few; it’s a game-changer empowering a whole new class of creators—what I’m calling 'creative builders.' These are the people who, armed with AI, can bring their ideas to life faster and more efficiently than ever before. And the best part? You could be one of them (and, of course, I am.)
The Birth of the Creative Builder
Creativity has always been about imagination, right? As Einstein famously said, “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.” But for the longest time, there’s been this frustrating gap between having a great idea and bringing it to life—especially if you’re not a coding wizard. That’s where AI comes in, bridging that gap and turning dreamers into doers.
Let me break it down with an example. Not too long ago, I built a meditation app. Now, if you know me, you know I’m not exactly a hardcore JS expert—I know just enough JavaScript to get by. But here’s the kicker: I didn’t write a single line of code for this app. Instead, I teamed up with Claude, an AI, and guided it through the process. In about 60 minutes, we had a fully functional Chrome extension built in React, complete with a CI pipeline and everything. Claude did the heavy lifting; I just pointed it in the right direction.
And it’s not just the meditation app. Thanks to AI, I’ve created a meme generator for my blog, a Substack Powertool, and even a genAI application to help my son practice his grammar. The time savings are ridiculous. What took me days or weeks is now done in hours. We’re talking about a 10-20x improvement in productivity, and this is just the beginning.
The creative builder is this: A human with lots of ideas and the power to execute them within hours and minutes, thanks to AI.
There have been creative builders before AI, but there were few and far between. Now, the scales shift.
Evolving From Traditional to AI-Enhanced Creativity
Einstein also said, “Creativity is intelligence having fun,” with AI, that fun is becoming much more accessible. Let’s compare the old-school creative process with what’s possible today. Back in the day, creativity was often shackled by technical bottlenecks. If you wanted to build something, you needed the skills or the money to hire someone with the skills. This naturally limited who could create, keeping many great ideas on the sidelines.
Enter AI. Tools like ChatGPT and Claude don’t just automate tasks; they turbocharge your creative capabilities. They let you focus on your vision while they handle the grunt work. This changes everything. Suddenly, the creative process isn’t stuck in the mud of coding or time constraints. You can prototype, iterate, and deploy faster than ever.
But here’s the thing: AI doesn’t replace the need for human input—it amplifies it. As Fei-Fei Li, an AI researcher and professor at Stanford, wisely puts it, in a world where AI can write, paint, and compose, the role of the human is to direct and refine, not to be replaced. Take my experience with Claude, for example. While it wrote the code for my app, it still needed me to steer the ship, to point out when something didn’t look right, or when there was a bug. Claude is powerful, but it’s not all-seeing. It’s up to us to provide context and align the AI’s outputs with our vision.
Why You’re Missing the Rise of the Creative Builder
Here’s the hard truth: you’re missing out. The rise of the creative builder is happening right now, and it’s flying right under your radar. If you saw what was happening, you’d already have gone all in on AI. But you haven’t. And almost no one has.
Why? Because AI is a general-purpose technology—it’s like electricity or the cloud. It’s everywhere, but its potential is so broad that it’s hard to pinpoint exactly how it will change everything. You don’t know how AI will revolutionize your creative process until you use it. It’s like trying to understand the internet in the ‘90s—until you’re deep in it, you just don’t get it.
Most people won’t tell you how AI transforms their work because they might not even realize it. It’s subtle, quiet, and automation that hums in the background, making everything faster, better, and more competent. You probably benefit from it in ways you don’t even recognize yet. But here’s the kicker—if you understood what AI could do for you, you wouldn’t hesitate. You’d be diving headfirst into it.
You’re not seeing the rise of the creative builder because it’s not slapping you in the face—it’s sneaking up on you. And by the time you finally notice, those who’ve embraced it will be light-years ahead. So, let me ask you: Will you sit this one out? Or are you ready to catch up before it’s too late?
FWIW: If you’re not convinced, write to me, call me, DM me, and I’ll convince you.
The Implications of the Creative Builder Era
So, what does this mean for industries and individuals? For starters, it’s democratizing creativity. The tools that used to be reserved for the pros are now accessible to anyone with an idea and a willingness to learn. This is expanding the creative economy, bringing new voices and fresh ideas.
This shift is both a golden opportunity and a wake-up call for industries. Companies that embrace the creative builder mindset will innovate faster and more efficiently. They’ll tap into a broader talent pool—people who might not have the technical chops but have the ideas to drive the next big thing. On the flip side, it also means more competition. As more people gain the ability to create, the market will get crowded, and the need to stand out will become even more critical.
We’re witnessing the birth of a new kind of creator—someone who leverages AI to bring ideas to life, regardless of their technical background. This isn’t just about speeding up the creative process; it’s about expanding what’s possible.
What’s Next for Creativity?
Looking ahead, the creative builder's role will only get bigger. As AI evolves, we’ll see even more people using these tools to bring their ideas to life. The definition of being a creator is expanding, encompassing a much broader range of skills and backgrounds.
But this future isn’t without its challenges. AI is still prone to making basic mistakes—things that seem obvious to us but aren’t to the machine. This is where the human element remains crucial. As creative builders, we must be good at pairing, communicating, and guiding AI tools to align with our vision. This requires patience, high-level thinking, and a deep understanding of technology and creative processes.
Embrace the Creative Builder Within You
We’re on the brink of a creative revolution, and AI is the driving force. It’s redefining what it means to be a creator, opening the doors for a new generation of creative builders. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a leader in the data space, or just someone with a big idea, AI is the tool that can turn your vision into reality. The future of creativity is here, and it’s not waiting for anyone. So why should you? Dive in, explore these AI tools, and start building. The possibilities are endless, and the only limit is your imagination.
If this resonates with you, there’s more where that came from. Stick around because this journey into the AI-powered world of creativity is just beginning.
